Xbox one s what can it do besides games. Review of the Xbox One S gaming console

Let's finish the analysis appearance not entirely external elements, but rather internal ones: let’s mention the important fact that the xbox one x has cooling with an evaporation chamber. This made the console the quietest on the market. Compact, powerful, quiet, and even with a built-in power supply - bravo Microsoft engineers!

What's inside - comparison of fillings and characteristics

Main advantage Xbox One X is a significant hardware upgrade. As a result, the console’s power indicators are several times higher than those of competitors on the market. Let's take a closer look at the characteristics:

The performance of the Xbox One X is 6.0 Teraflops, which is not small. If we compare these figures with the two previous consoles, this is 4.5 times more. As we can see above, the Xbox One offers 1.23 - TFLOPS, while the Model S offers 1.4 TFLOPS.

The processor clock frequency has been increased, and significantly. Previous models had 1.75 GHz on board and no more, but the Xbox One X managed to reach 2.3 GHz. All thanks to a custom 8-core processor based on AMD Jaguar. GPU expanded to 40 blocks. If we compare it with the original model and the xbox one s, both had 12 blocks.

The latest Microsoft console also has more RAM - the xbox one x has 12 GB of GDDR5 built-in, while the S and the regular One have only 8 GB of DDR3. By updating the RAM, which is used by both the system and the graphics core, as well as due to the new graphics core, the set-top box supports gaming in 4K resolution with a frame rate of about sixty.

The improvements also did not bypass the hard drive of the console. The xbox one x 1 TV's built-in hard drive reads and writes 50% faster than lower-end models. Note that this is due to both the hard drive and the improvements to the entire hardware of the console.

Considering the power that the Xbox One X is ready to offer, it is logical to assume that the console is “powered” accordingly - power consumption will reach up to 245W. If we compare it with the S model, then for it this figure is 120W. However, Microsoft representatives claim that their latest console independently selects the right amount of power depending on the load. Actually, like all modern consoles and electronic devices.

Comparing hardware, we can say that xbox one x is the most powerful console not only in the Microsoft family, but also in the world. Remember our installation of xbox one x and ps4 pro. Even PS4 pro is inferior in some respects. However, the question is still whether to buy X or S and whether it is worth replacing the original xbox with a new one. And if it is, then again we return to the first question. So let's move on.

Field test - comparison of graphics in games

All games on Xbox One X and Xbox One S look better than on the original box. We also note that the original model supports a maximum of 1080p. But 4K is available not only on the Xbox one X, but also on the S. It may seem that the Xbox one s is a better deal - the console is cheaper and at the same time allows you to enjoy even the latest projects in 4K resolution. To understand whether there is a difference in graphics and how big this difference is between X and S, I suggest comparing the graphics in games:

At first glance it may seem that there is no difference. But, starting at 0:37 seconds of the video, when the camera moves to the view from the hood, we see a difference in the reflection of the environment on the same hood. On Xbox one X, your surroundings are reflected more clearly. How important this is and whether it’s worth overpaying $200 for it is up to you to decide. My opinion is not worth it.

We also note that both Xbox one X and S support HDR 10. Therefore, if you have an appropriate output device, you can enjoy more advanced graphics in games than on a regular Xbox One. As for Full HD screens, the graphics on the Xbox One X will look more attractive on them than on the original console and than on the S version. Therefore, it is not true to say that the xbox one x is only for 4K displays. See the difference in FullHD between Xbox one X and Xbox one below:

As you can see, the difference is more noticeable than between X and S. However, if you are not an avid graphomaniac, you will not get much less pleasure from playing on a regular Xbox one. Of course, it’s no longer worth buying a classic Xbox one, but as for a replacement, you should first of all think about the question of how important graphics in games are to you personally. The answer to this question will be the answer to the replacement question.

Since 4K support and other features were provided simultaneously to the S and X models, you will most likely want to know why you should choose the second option. There is even a section dedicated to this topic on the official Microsoft website. It details what the Xbox One X benefits and what you're paying for. There is also a list of games that look better on the Model X. This list includes: Rise of the Tomb Raider, Forza 7, Titanfall 2, Shadow of War, Gears of War 4 and Assassins Creed Origins. However, you shouldn't expect super quality on the X version. All the games on the list, as we saw above, don’t look much worse on the S version of the console. In fairness, we note that Gears of War 4, Assassins Creed Origins and Forza 7 show stable 60 fps only on Xbox one X.

And now Gears of War 4, but compared to Xbox one S:

Fans of multiplayer games will find it useful to know that now popular game Fortnite also delivers 60 fps only on the Xbox One X console. If you like such projects and know that you will spend a huge number of hours in them, and your motto is “60 fps and not a frame less,” then the choice is between Microsoft consoles obvious.

    Verdict

If you still have the original Xbox One and the graphics in games are the most important thing for you, then feel free to change the console to the Xbox one X. If the graphics are not the most important thing, calmly enjoy the games on the original Xbox one. I don’t think it’s advisable to switch from a classic console to Xbox one S.

For those who do not have a console and the choice fell on Microsoft consoles, there is only one question worth answering: are you willing to overpay for graphics? If the answer is yes, then you can safely take the Xbox One X and enjoy both exceptionally clear 4K pictures and comfortable gaming on a FullHD screen with 60 fps in all games. We advise everyone else to save money and buy an Xbox One S - the console is enough for modern games in FullHD and even 4K.

Thank you very much for your attention to the article. Unfortunately, the comment block is not ready yet. Therefore, if you have any questions, then leave them under a similar video on my topic YouTube channel. I will be glad to answer all your questions.

Controlling Xbox One from your phone or remote control

Following the release of the XboxOne consoles, Microsoft released mobile app SmartGlass(now just XBOX), thanks to which users can control their console using an Android tablet or smartphone, Windows Phone, as well as iPhone and iPad.

The program turns your phone or tablet into a controller with which you can find and control games, view photos, videos or listen to music. In addition, the application gives access to the entire variety of Xbox Live functions (store, games, friends, feeds, communication, shopping, etc.).

You can configure SmartGlass in the following ways:

For fans of remote control, a remote control is offered. With its help, you can easily control the viewing of movies, television, music, and, in general, the entire XboxOne console.

The release of two main game consoles new generation, numerous reviews have told readers about each of them, and it's time to ask the question, who is leading? Reviewers at Cnet.com believe that the PlayStation 4 is winning so far, although not by much. In reviews on the site, both of them received 3.5 points, but the extended rating for PS4 is 7.5 points versus 7 points for Xbox One.

Three and a half stars by Cnet standards is a good indicator, indicating that both systems have a good set of functionality and hardware characteristics. However, she says that reviewers see no reason to rush to buy any of the presented consoles as soon as possible, in their current unfinished state.

PlayStation 4 - left, XBox One - right

Design: Xbox One - 7.0, PS4 - 8.0

Design includes both the design of hardware components and housing, as well as software. In both cases, the advantage is on PlayStation's side. From a hardware point of view, the main advantage is the power supply integrated into the console, while the Xbox One, like the Xbox 360, uses a large external unit. This is especially noteworthy considering that the PS4 is still smaller in size than its competitor.

As for the user interface, everyone must decide for themselves which one they like best. PS4 interface is an update previous version with support for features such as multitasking and broadcast hub. Xbox One has a very dynamic interface, however, from time to time you can feel lost in it (the same can be said about Windows 8). This is partly due to the close integration of the Kinect controller and voice commands into the control process, which do not always work as perfectly as planned by the developers. For example, the console does not always respond to commands, forcing you to repeat them again (in especially severe cases, forcing you to add some unprintable expressions to them).

Ecosystem: Xbox One - 6.0, PS4 - 6.0

The range of games and applications available at the time of console release is not at all amazing. At the same time, the Microsoft console has an advantage in the number of exclusive games available on it. This Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome and Forza Motorsport 5, while the PS4 has Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack. There are other games for each console, but nothing particularly noteworthy among them. A number of notable games like FIFA 14 and NBA 2K14 are available on both consoles.

The big drawback of both consoles is the fact that they currently lack compatibility with games for previous generation consoles. The problem in this case is much greater than it was when the Xbox 360 and PS3 appeared, which brought with them such a leap in performance that no one wanted to even remember the old games. In addition, the PS3 had backward compatibility with the PS2, and half of the games for the original Xbox ran on the Xbox 360. Now, many of the recently released games for the Xbox 360 and PS3 are not much inferior to the games for the consoles that replaced them.

For Sony, the problem will have to be solved next year by the game streaming service Gaikai, but the company prefers not to talk about the details of how exactly this will be implemented.

Functionality: Xbox One - 8.0, PS4 - 7.0

The word One is in the Xbox One name for a reason. In its console, Microsoft wants to combine all the user's multimedia entertainment into one node and provide access to them through a single interface. This is done using the sophisticated second-generation Kinect sensor and its many outstanding capabilities. This is very different from the gaming-oriented PlayStation 4, in which the developers removed support for standards such as DLNA, CD, MP3 and JPEG.

Instead, some new features were introduced, for example, support for launching PS Vita games using the Remote Play function, the ability to broadcast gameplay to live and share clips with viewers, plus it has its own camera for “augmented reality” games and facial recognition. Despite all this, the Xbox One's capabilities seem more "futuristic". For example, this refers to the ability to instantly switch between gaming and watching TV using voice commands, or even simply display both images at the same time.

Microsoft's only problem is that it's not perfect software. A Cnet review has this to say about it. “After using the Xbox One for a few days, you begin to understand that Microsoft is determined to give the user the ability to combine all of their digital entertainment into their console. However, it is also obvious that their plan has not yet been fully realized, and you constantly catch yourself thinking about the incompleteness of this or that function.”

There is also reason to criticize the capabilities of the PS4. The console should be taught to read files from USB drives, as the PS3 can do; the lack of DLNA has already been mentioned. Also, 3D Blu-Ray discs are not supported (as is the case on Xbox One).

Performance: Xbox One - 7.0, PS4 - 8.0

If you compare console processors, the PS4 has a slight advantage, but overall the same games look the same on them. The biggest performance hit the Xbox takes is when it comes to controls and navigation. She recognizes voice commands about 75% of the time, which doesn't add any points to her score.

Cost: Xbox One - 6.0, PS4 - 7.0

The PS4 costs $100 less, although the Xbox includes a Kinect controller, while the Sony console requires an additional camera purchase. It costs $60 and is not such a mandatory component of the system. Don't forget that it's extremely difficult to do anything on Xbox One without registering with Xbox Live, and a one-year subscription will cost $60.

On PS4, online play will also require a $50 PlayStation Plus subscription. However, you can do without it and use third-party solutions such as Netflix. Ultimately, if all of the Xbox One's features worked as they should without limitations like lack of DVR support, it would be easier to accept spending an extra $100 on it. Until Microsoft fixes all the bugs, which should happen sooner or later, the PlayStation 4 seems to be a more valuable acquisition. However, this is just the beginning, and if PS4 has won the battle, then the whole war is yet to come.

What you should know before buying a Playstation 4. It's time for a little briefing on the second next-generation console - the Xbox One. As part of this material, I have specifically highlighted the most interesting points that consumers should know.

Xbox One comes with one game controller, Kinect 2nd generation camera, HDMI cable, power cable, and power adapter. Also included is a headset for communicating with other players. By the way, they initially wanted to exclude this headset from the set, since Microsoft tried to meet the price of $499, and the headset slightly exceeded this price range. But in the end everything worked out well, and they decided to keep the headset.

2. Mandatory update

Immediately after purchasing and connecting your Xbox One, you will have to download and install a mandatory update, which will enable many of the blocked functions of the console. In the same way, owners of Playstation 4, as well as Nintendo Wii U, had to install the update. The patch for Xbox One weighs about 500 megabytes. It will download and install, depending on your Internet speed, in an average of 15-20 minutes. Without installing this patch, you will not be able to play games, since the console will require you to install it.

3. Digital downloads and content storage

Players will be able to purchase almost all games digitally on the day of their release. As with the Playstation 4, the console will not have any regional restrictions. Microsoft has confirmed that it will allow you to connect external hard drives to the console to store purchased games on them when the space on the internal hard drive of the Xbox One runs out. The right decision, considering that absolutely all games require complete mandatory installation on HDD. Let us remind you that the console has a built-in 500 GB HDD, which you do not have the right to replace with a drive bigger size. At the very beginning of sales there will not be the ability to connect an external drive, but it will appear with the release of subsequent updates.

4. 21 games will be available at launch

On November 22, 21 games will be available in stores and on the Xbox Live digital distribution network to coincide with the launch of Xbox One. Six games will be exclusive to the console: Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome, Crimson Dragon, and digital only - Lococycle and Killer Instinct. Several multi-platform and cross-platform projects will also be available: Battlefield 4, : Ghosts, Skylanders: Swap Force, Need for Speed: Rivals, Just Dance 4, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Madden 25, NBA 2K14, FIFA 14, NBA Live 14, Zumba Fitness World Party, Fighter Within, Powerstar Golf, Zoo Tycoon And Angry Birds Star Wars.

5. Integration with cable TV

The Xbox One has an HDMI input into which you can plug any external signal source, as was previously the case with VCRs, into which you could plug an antenna cable, and only then connect the tape recorder to the TV. In this case, Microsoft is focusing on Western consumers who will be able to plug their satellite receiver into the console, turning the Xbox One into an entertainment center that shows different channels and can play games. You can instantly switch between the game and the TV show using a gamepad, gestures or voice commands. The console also has a built-in special TV guide that will allow you to select your favorite channels from the entire variety of television broadcasts and assign each of them a specific voice command for quick switching. While watching TV, your console must, of course, be turned on.

6. New Kinect

Each console will now come with a version 2.0 sensor, and it's much more advanced than its predecessor on the Xbox 360. The camera now sees your room from a wider angle, and is also able to work in complete darkness. When the updated Kinect sees your face, it will immediately load your game profile. It is able to recognize the voices of registered users even among loud noise, and also constantly listens to their commands. The sensor can determine whether you are angry or happy, afraid or burning with impatience. It can even calculate your heart rate just by looking at you. It tracks the position of your entire skeleton and sees the tension of individual muscle groups. The console will also have built-in Xbox app Fitness, which will allow you to do physical exercises under the supervision of professional trainers and, of course, the new Kinect.

7. New Dashboard

Dashboard is the name of the main menu of Xbox consoles, starting with the Xbox 360. Now the main menu can be even more finely customized. Players will be able to customize the color scheme and pin up to 25 of their favorite games, apps, TV shows or movies to the main welcome page so they can quickly access them without having to search through dozens of other icons. On the one hand, the console menu is very similar to what modern smartphones and tablets offer us, and on the other hand, the Xbox One operating system is based on Windows 8 and this is visible to the naked eye. Microsoft is trying to make a universal interface for all its devices, and it is not yet entirely clear what all this will result in in the end. In general, Xbox One runs on not one, but three operating systems that run in parallel: a system for running applications, a system for running video games, and a third system that connects the first two.

8. Skype

Skype will be integrated into Xbox One at the system level. You'll be able to make video calls using your contacts list and the updated Kinect sensor. At the same time, you can even walk around the room, the smart camera will move its focus after you as long as you are in its field of view. When there is no one else in the room except you, Kinect will carefully enlarge your face so that the interlocutor can see you better. But if you are not alone in the room, the camera will cover the entire company and will not forget about anyone. You can also play video games while talking on Skype or even watch TV at the same time. Your interlocutor will be displayed in a smaller window on the right, so as not to interfere with the gameplay or watching TV.

9. New controller

The Xbox One controller will contain more than 40 innovations, ranging from a recessed battery compartment (in previous version gamepad, this compartment greatly interfered with the fingers) and a slight redesign, ending with additional vibration motors that are built into the gamepad triggers. Now, when shooting in shooters, you will feel the weapon’s recoil under your fingers in the form of distinct impulses. Also, due to numerous requests from fans of fighting games, the so-called D-pad (crosspad) was redesigned. Now the direction buttons have become more precise in pressing and are even more separated from each other. The Start and Back buttons have been replaced with Menu and View. The gamepad itself has become slightly smaller in size, which, according to Microsoft engineers, will not at all affect its excellent ergonomics. Let's take their word for it, because the corporation from Redmond poured more than $100 million into the development of the new controller.

10. Launch date and price

Russia, unfortunately, is not among those countries where the new Microsoft game console will begin selling on November 22. Representatives of the company stated that for some countries they had not yet completed the interface (including voice commands in national languages), and also had not resolved all legal issues related to the launch of the new gaming platform in certain regions. So we are waiting for the official launch of Xbox One in Russia sometime in 2014. In the US, the set-top box will cost $499, in Europe – 499 euros, and in the UK – 429 pounds. In Russia, presumably, the console will cost 23, or even 25 thousand rubles. But all this is still just guesswork, taking into account our national taxes and other markups. You can buy the console at a European price on November 22 in European online stores like Computeruniverse.net, Zavvi.com, Amazon.de and others.

If you have any questions, you can ask me directly in the comments. But due to the fact that I am physically unable to respond to everyone instantly, please be patient. If I have the necessary information, I will definitely answer.

A year has already passed since the start of the next battle in the long-term war of game consoles. This is exactly how long users in the United States and a number of other countries (in the rest of the world, including Russia, much less) can choose between two main competitors, Xbox One from Microsoft and PlayStation 4 from Sony.

For most of 2014, the Japanese company seemed to be winning the battle - Sony representatives regularly reported significantly higher sales than Microsoft. There were many reasons for this, for example - the price is $100 higher than the PS4. Not least of all, a number of controversial decisions (mandatory use of a Kinect controller, mandatory connection of the console to the Internet to launch games, etc.) made in Redmond on the eve of the release of a new product on the market, and then revised, also played a role. Many were also doubted by reports that in the same games the graphics quality (more precisely, picture resolution - these are not always synonymous) of the Xbox One is lower than that of the PlayStation 4.

As a result, according to data as of the end of October 2014, in about a year, Sony sold 19.1 million consoles of all generations, and Microsoft - 12.9 million. However, the dynamics began to change already in the third quarter - consoles from Microsoft began to quickly catch up with Sony devices thanks to the release a cheaper option without Kinect and numerous software updates that made Xbox One more convenient and functional. Finally, in a number of markets, in anticipation of the pre-New Year sales boom, Microsoft reduced the price of the Xbox One (in the US by $50) and here is the result: November sales of the console in America reached 1.2 million units, surpassing similar figures for the competing Sony PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Wii U. In total, since the start of sales, as of mid-November, Microsoft has shipped 10 million Xbox One units to retailers around the world.

Having received a Microsoft console for testing a couple of weeks ago, we tried to figure out what the Xbox One is like a year later, in what ways it is inferior to its competitors, and in what ways it is superior to them. Without trying to take away bread from our colleagues from Gmbox, we’ll leave them to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the games available for the console (there are more and more high-quality and truly innovative next-gen titles), as well as convenient and inconvenient parts of the controller (in our opinion, it is still more convenient than PS4).

Let's look at things more broadly, especially since Microsoft continues to position the Xbox One as “more than just a console.” After all, the device was originally conceived by the developers as a universal media center, designed to implement all the functions that a user sitting in front of the TV might need. And even if he sat down to play, why not make life more convenient, for example, by launching Skype, Twitch, or a panel that displays in-game achievements in real time in split-screen mode? Unfortunately, at first, and even in the summer, minor flaws, lack of thought and simply bugs left users with mixed feelings. Now, and especially after the firmware update released in October, the Xbox One is perceived completely differently.

The October update significantly improved split-screen multitasking. Let us remind you that double-clicking the central Xbox button on the controller brings up a cross-shaped menu for controlling “pinned applications” - that is, those that can be displayed as a narrow vertical strip “stuck” to the edge of the screen. You can “stick” one of several system applications (record gameplay, “Achievements”, etc.) or downloaded from the “Store” - like Skype or YouTube. You can switch between the game in the main part of the screen and the “sticky” application by double-pressing the Xbox button and then pressing the D-pad right or left. This functionality (if you need it, of course) definitely puts the Xbox One ahead of the competition.

A number of other innovations in the October update affected the multimedia capabilities of the Xbox One. The console has finally received full DLNA support, so now it’s even easier to “stream” pictures, videos and music to it from any DLNA-compatible sources. In addition, the inevitable happened - support appeared for the traditionally unloved major manufacturers electronics, but such popular video files on the Internet in the .mkv container. Moreover, all these are not just stated “for show” capabilities - they really work, in general - without problems, Full HD video is played quickly not only from media connected directly to the console, but also over a wired local network.

Less significant, but important for many, innovations were brought by and. For example, it made it possible to set an arbitrary image as a dashboard background. In addition, integration with Twitter is being developed - saved video of the gameplay can now be easily sent to your followers. A built-in browser Internet Explorer You can now “snap” to the edge of the screen, which will allow you, for example, to consult online help or tips for completing the game without stopping the game.

Of course, Russian owners of the Xbox One, which has been officially sold in our country since the beginning of autumn, would like more. For example, the ability to fully use television functionality by connecting the provider’s digital set-top box to the console. Yes, the console can transmit a picture “through and through” in the case of some set-top boxes (for example, Beeline), but support for the OneGuide service for Russia has not yet been implemented. The digital TV tuner that appeared on European shelves in October for only 30 euros, which allows you to watch regular terrestrial TV using Xbox One, is also not for sale here.

Our test console did not come with a Kinect sensor, so we can judge its usefulness only from reviews on the Internet - it is still, at least, doubtful. However, the Xbox One is clearly maturing, which with each new update makes the console an increasingly serious competitor to the PlayStation 4, which was initially loved by a larger number of gamers.
