    As you might guess, we will be operating in the Caribbean. But - an interesting point - the time frame has noticeably shifted towards the “side of modernity”. The action does not take place in the 17th century, as in Sid Meier's Pirates! And not even in the “golden age of piracy” (this is approximately from 1700 to 1720). The game begins somewhere in the year 1760; when it ends, it is possible to determine I don’t think so. In any case, it contains this:

    Plot? Well yes, there is something similar. Here it is:

It’s the same with sails: by chasing the enemy from the stern and firing nipples from the running cannons, you will never knock down his “bow” sails.

    Secondly, the broadside here is generally a rather subtle matter. In all "sailing" games, aiming the guns is done differently. PCH in this regard is the epitome of simplicity: there are no guns aimed at all. But they do not shoot strictly perpendicular to the board (as, say, in Wind of Luck). They have the most natural aiming point - yes, approximately the same as that of cannons and machine guns of World War II era fighters. (Well, it’s true that fighters might have had more than one point, and its position could have been varied, but let’s not get caught up in the details). The consequences are quite curious: you watch in dull surprise as your frigate's crushing broadside, a point-blank broadside that was supposed to tear the lousy enemy ketch to shreds, suddenly misses completely. But several ketch cannons fire over and over again and don’t think of missing. You have to get used to such an innovation.

    Thirdly, the game has a truly terrible weapon - Floating Powder Kegs. The idea is simple. They are chasing us, we are running away, the pursuer is in our wake. This is where we throw such a barrel from the stern. And if everything goes right, the pursuer will successfully run into her (the AI ​​does not know how to evade such surprises).

Having a sufficient number of barrels and knowing how to use them, you can, with only one brig, multiply three or four battleships by zero. True, you won’t master this “ability to apply” right away; there are all sorts of tricks there too. But once you master it - oh...

    This is an analogue of torpedoes. Moreover, guided torpedoes. Moreover, you control not a torpedo, but a target. How? Here's how. The enemy, chasing you, strives to accurately point his nose at you. And you, naturally, make sharp turns left and right so that the enemy, having turned on you, would also turn on the thrown barrel if it suddenly fell a little to the side of the desired position.

    This mark, exactly under the setting sun, is the point where the bombs from the mortar will fly. It is necessary, as you understand, for them to fly to that fort over there. Forts are destroyed surprisingly easily.


    Well, fourthly, you can (and should) put a special weapon on your boat - a mortar. The mortar is needed to destroy forts when capturing cities. (What does it mean “in the second half of the 18th century this almost never happened”? We will have it. And almost every day). In general, the forts here are surprisingly weak opponents. And unlike any other games, their power does not depend on the size of the city being covered. They are always equally dead. True, the city is always covered by a naval force, and often quite powerful, but - let’s look at the “thirdly” point.

    Boarding
    But here it is surprisingly primitive. Especially compared to everything else. We come close, an icon with a “cat” appears on the screen, click on it... Then everything is determined by the usual numerical ratio of forces. In a special window, messages like: “We killed two,” “We killed two,” “We killed two,” and so on until someone runs out of people. Here, of course, you can upgrade the corresponding skill and retrofit the ship, as a result of which the messages will change to something like this: “We killed five” - “we killed two.” This makes it possible to fight with an enemy who has a certain numerical superiority.

    Of course, here, as elsewhere, it is recommended to thin out the enemy crew with buckshot immediately before boarding. But either I didn’t understand something, or the authors overdid something... In general, it’s very difficult to fire a truly effective canister volley here. It's easier to hook up right away. Otherwise, while you are dancing around the enemy, trying to cover him with small iron, he may well have time to disfigure you so that boarding simply will not pay off - more money will be spent on repairs.

    But, again, maybe it’s something I didn’t understand.

    Two sails and a tack
    How realistic is PCH in general when it comes to sailing?

    Let's just say that it is noticeably more realistic than Tempest, which was recently released into its final release and is still in early access Man o"War: Corsair.

    Let's start with the fact that the ships here are exactly what they say they are. If they show you a ship and tell you that it is a schooner, you can clearly see that it is indeed a schooner. This makes a good impression. Especially after Tempest, where they showed you a brig, but called it a frigate, and the brig was a three-deck, no worse than a battleship. A lot can be said about Corsair, too, but here we must make allowances for the fact that this is happening in Warhammer universe, and you yourself know what it is.

    Unlike these same games, here leftist is a real dead zone into which you get stuck. Frankly, I have already begun to somehow wean myself from such strictness.

    In general, local AI cannot be called completely stupid. In battle, he acts quite competently. But for some reason it doesn’t know how to go around such atolls completely, tightly resting on the shore. Bye, idiot.


    Finally, here the sail rig really affects the behavior of your boat in different winds. Vessels with oblique rigs have slightly worse speed in jibe and backstay than vessels with straight rigs. But close-hauled, on the contrary, it’s better. And the dead zone is noticeably narrower.

    And there is one more point. Extremely unusual. Perhaps even unique (I don’t remember another game that had this - if anyone remembers, tell me).

    In general, here there are not one point of application of sail thrust (as everywhere else), but two. At the bow and stern. We will again conventionally call them “bow” and “stern” masts. In practice, this gives amazing results. Let's explain with an example.

    Let's say we are on a close-hauled course, on port tack, and want to turn to starboard tack. What needs to be done for this? - That's right, children, tack. To the left.

    How do we act in a normal sailing game? It’s simple: we press the “A” key as if we were a class enemy and sadly watch as the ship is driven towards the wind, and our speed drops. And the harder it falls, the more sluggishly we turn around. If the speed was not enough, we would get stuck.

    How is it done in The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt? We knock on “W” - “remove the sails on the “bow mast”. Your boat immediately begins to turn to the left, towards the wind, on its own - the thrust has become asymmetrical. If you help it with the rudder (still the same “A”), it will roll rapidly. We cross the wind Immediately we tap again on “W” - “set the bow sails” and on “S” - “remove the stern sails.” Now we are falling into the wind, and with no less speed: the thrust is again asymmetrical.     How realistic is this? To be honest, not especially. A real sailboat does not have abstract “bow” and “stern” masts; each raised sail creates its own thrust vector, and in addition, the ship’s hull does the same thing, because it also has windage. But from a gameplay point of view, this is a great find: an advanced maneuvering technique that YOU master yourself (rather than taking the corresponding skill when leveling up). The technique, by the way, is not so simple - at first you will constantly get confused with the keys. Moreover, everything still needs to be done there very quickly.

    These things could add a lot of variety to PvP matches. The only problem is that multiplayer in PCH is dead at the moment. I simply couldn’t connect with anyone - there was no one.

    Your few sheds
    The game's promotional video showed the construction of a pirate base and did not sin at all against the truth: everything was exactly as it was demonstrated. But de facto, infrastructure development here is at the same primitive level as boarding. We build a warehouse, then a store (a little money starts to trickle in), then a cotton factory (cotton can be sold), then a shipyard (you can repair your boat at a discount), after that, having saved up money, we upgrade what we already have and build what we need.     In my opinion, the main problem of the game is that it somehow got stuck halfway from a mobile time killer to a full-fledged product for the PC. For a PC, this thing has too monotonous, too monotonous gameplay. Plus, in appearance, let’s say, she doesn’t really shine. But for a mobile application that is good to tinker with in some regular waiting room or already, so to speak, on board vehicle on the contrary, it is rather complex; you constantly have to think and make decisions (and in some cases, do it very quickly).
