Of all the games released in the genre, not counting the release of last year's hits on other platforms, few gave real sports excitement.
But these few, fortunately, captivated us for a long time and completely drove away the melancholy from a generally insipid year.
Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo
Several important races of past years have expanded the list of platforms. DiRT Rally was simply transferred from PC to consoles with all the additions and forced to produce 60 frames per second. It turns out that almost the entire genre is being closed down by one single, not the most talented studio, which is sad. True, considering what a complex and niche genre the developers are working in and what modest successes they are demonstrating, the situation can be understood.
There was, however, one exception: Moto Racer 4 - the return of the classic motorcycle racing series of the late 90s. But here's the problem: apart from nostalgia, high-speed and competitive races through traffic, almost like in old Moto Racers, the game offers nothing. And it doesn't look or feel very modern.
In the spring, Sony was disappointed by announcing the closure of Evolution Studios, the authors of WRC and Motorstorm.
Their last game- DriveClub turned out to be not the easiest for the studio. There was a rumor that it was not very desirable: the team would prefer the new Motorstorm to it. So the project came out crude at the start. But in just a year and a half, the game acquired a photo mode, the best weather effects in the genre, the number of cars and tracks increased several times, and two new modes appeared: with bikes and increased realism.

There are only about ten people left from Criterion, and they new project recently cancelled. Reflection is currently helping Ubisoft and is unlikely to take on Driver anytime soon.

For many years we have seen some mechanics dying off in big games, find a place in small indie projects. Increasingly, this is happening in racing. Retro-futuristic Neon Drive has a lot of drifting, like in OutRun, neon, electronic music and DeLorean-like cars. Mantis Burn Racing is the new Mash. And Redout successfully develops the ideas of Wipeout.
There were also unusual projects. In Bears Can't Drift!? - bears, toy cars and drift. In Drive! Drive! Drive! you had to control several cars at once, alternately switching between them. OmniBus offered to rush around a variety of locations on a super-fast bus (from ordinary cities to a huge paintball table and space) and destroy everything around. Wheels of Aurelia took you on a trip to Italy in the 70s and at the same time told a non-linear story. And Bicyclism EP was a whole playground with physics puzzles and bicycles.
All these small projects were not something new to the genre, but they skillfully repeated forgotten mechanics from the past and experimented with them.
Riptide GP: Renegade
Mobile racing is not easy. Asphalt Xtreme tried its best to be like Motorstorm and Burnout, but the crashes in it were not tasty enough, there was not enough drive and complexity.

Trackmania Turbo
