Why fallout 4 won't load. Software update

Reasons why Fallout 4 won't start, there are quite a few. This may be caused by a mismatch in your hardware configuration. In addition, you may have to tinker with the game settings and software.

Software

First of all, update your NVidia and AMD drivers. The game requires a lot random access memory. If there are any applications running in the background, shut them down. This could be antivirus, torrents, Skype and other programs.

Great if you use licensed version games – verify files on Steam. If you have a pirated version, try finding another distribution.

Launch the game as an Administrator in 7.0 compatibility mode.

Stay tuned for patch releases. Install version 11 of Direct X.

Settings

Set lower graphic settings (quality of textures, shadows, drawing distance, light, etc.). You have to choose between a beautiful picture and gameplay. Disable anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. You can do this by opening the NVidia Control Panel.

Make sure there are no Cyrillic characters in the game installation path.

You may have to play in windowed mode. Although it is enabled in the main menu settings, you will have to do it manually as it does not start Fallout game 4. To do this, find the Fallout4Prefs.ini files. One is located in the game folder, the second is in the Steam folder. Open both files with Notepad and find the following block:

Lenovo Y50 gaming laptop
OS: Windows 8.1 x64
RAM: 8 GB
processor: Intel Core i7 4710HQ 2.50 GHz
video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M

I’m creating a topic in the hope that at least it will help someone, because my story is full of pain. In short, I did something to the poor laptop that he won’t forget for a long time.

LONG STORY (if this section seems too long and boring to you, don’t skip it, because there are useful tips below):

I have a powerful Lenovo Y50 gaming laptop. The characteristics correspond to those recommended for the game, so when the game did not start, it was a shock to me.
What exactly did I do wrong? When I launched Launcher, the program gave me a message that it would now determine the characteristics of my laptop and select the recommended graphics settings for it. But I have a cool gaming laptop! Therefore, I spit on the low quality set by default, and even before launching the game, I set everything to ultra and to maximum. The game started, but not in full screen and was constantly blinking: either the normal image of the video insert, or a black screen.
After trying every possible combination of graphics settings, I finally put the game in windowed mode and everything worked again.
I hate windowed mode. In addition, the game crashed several times, most likely due to a known error with drivers stopping working.
I started tormenting video drivers. I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M. Having read somewhere on the forums that in some case it is possible and necessary to remove these drivers, and remove them by installing a special program that will clean everything, go to safe mode, run the program, reboot, go to safe mode again, turn around three times around you, make sure that there are no NVIDIA files on the computer at all, and only then start installing the drivers again. Either this simply cannot be done, or something went wrong for me personally, but after this fraud, not a single game started for me - either on Steam or outside of it.
I rolled back the system because it was the last option. After the rollback, something crazy happened, but it has little to do with the topic (more on that at the very bottom).
By the way, I wanted to request a refund from Steam, but they told me that the refund is only made if less than 2 hours are spent in the game, and the refund was requested no more than 2 weeks after the purchase. And it doesn’t matter that the 4 hours allegedly played were spent in the launcher...

What should ideally be done before problems are discovered:
- update drivers for the video card (download from the supplier’s official website).
- make sure you have it latest version DirectX.
- after installation and before the first launch, check the integrity of the cache.
- try to launch the game for the first time without touching anything graphic settings. If it doesn’t work in full screen, it can work in windowed mode (I have frames).
- If everything works well and stably in its original form, you should remember/write down the set graphics parameters, after which you can start raising them little by little in the hope that it will work.

What you can do if problems arise:
- a certain patch 1.1.30 Beta has already been released, which fixes problems with xaudio. I don’t have this problem, I don’t know, I haven’t tried it.
- if you are going to rape your computer, be sure to create a system restore point before doing so. Consider that this is how you are saved.
- if you have already abused your computer to such an extent that you do not know where to turn for help, then it may be worth rolling back the system to a previously created restore point. Even if you yourself rarely play it safe, the system regularly does this for you and periodically creates recovery points on its own. By the way, the work of the antivirus can seriously interfere with the rollback - I personally had to uninstall my Avast and return it after the rollback.
- rebooting the computer, which rarely helps anyone (your cap);
- re-downloading Fallout 4, which is also unlikely to do anything;
- interesting way: run the game at a low resolution in windowed mode without a frame, and then, without leaving the game, set exactly the same resolution on the computer display itself. It helped.
- try to launch the game not through Steam, but directly from the installation folder: a) as an administrator; b) in compatibility troubleshooting mode.

What not to do:
- before the first launch of the game, change the default graphical parameters of the game.
- use the services of the NVIDIA GeForce Experince program to optimize the graphic parameters of the game. It was after performing this action that the game stopped starting for me at all (it didn’t go beyond the launcher).
- download from anywhere all sorts of “types that work” official patches"I think no one wants to catch an extra virus on their computer. There were a lot of similar “patches” even on the first day of Fallout 4.
- completely remove the pre-installed video card drivers in order to reinstall them later. In my case, this is what led to the fact that I couldn’t launch ANY game, because I couldn’t reinstall these drivers correctly even after long shamanic dances, chants and torment with a proprietary “clean” installation from NVIDIA.
- hurry to return the system to factory settings. Yes, on the forums one guy wrote with tears that he was forced to do this due to sudden problems with the video card, but until you find and try all possible ways to solve the problems, do not create unnecessary hassle for yourself. You don't need to do a system reset, really.
- worry.

12 hours. I spent 12 hours solving all the problems that I myself created. 12 o'clock, Karl!

P.S.
The most recent problem, which almost killed my computer and me at the same time, popped up after a system rollback. 5-10 minutes after turning on the laptop worked well, quickly, then it started to slow down, slowed down and finally stopped responding to any actions. Between clicking the right mouse button and highlighting the menu, 1.5-2 minutes passed. The task manager simply froze, I had to restart the computer.
After 5 reboots and several hours of dancing with tambourines, I discovered the problem by looking at the task manager: for some reason, Java processes were multiplying, without stopping, and loading the computer to such an extent that it simply froze! Uninstalled Java.

Unfortunately, some computers will not run Fallout 4 without some extra effort. Optimization does not allow it to work equally well on all PCs or laptops. It is possible that it will freeze and crash, or it will take forever to load with a black screen. In this article we will try to solve the problem when Fallout 4 does not work or crashes.

Fallout 4 starts and crashes without error

As a rule, this happens due to the fact that the computer or laptop has outdated drivers for the video card. Incompatibility between the game and the software causes Fallout 4 to crash on the desktop.

The second most common problem with launching Fallout 4 is wrong resolution. Due to a very strange optimization from Bethesda, the game refuses to work if its resolution does not match the resolution of the monitor.

The last reason is too weak computer. He is unable to even pull Fallout launch 4, which is why it doesn’t go further than trying to boot. Unfortunately, this cannot be cured by anything other than setting the lowest possible settings (it’s easy to find special configurations online for completely weak computers) or, if all else fails, replacing the computer.

Fallout 4 won't start, stuck on black screen

There are several reasons why Fallout 4 may be stuck on a black screen and won't launch. First - "crooked" pirate assembly, in which some important files have been changed or deleted. Unfortunately, pirates do not always manage to maintain the original integrity of the game. In addition, something could have been damaged during the download process.

Again, it may be a simple weakness of the computer. But this time it is able to at least allow Fallout 4 to launch, but not to ensure it works.

Fallout 4 only works in windowed mode

Oddly enough, windowed mode is more undemanding of computer resources than full-screen mode. Therefore, owners of weak machines are recommended to play in it. Therefore, if Fallout 4 runs in windowed mode, but not in full screen, you should think about the fact that it’s high time to update your computer. The reason most often lies here.

What to do if Fallout 4 won't start

There are several ways you can solve the problem with starting the game. But first you need to try to do things from the following list. It is likely that they will help deal with the client failure and return Fallout 4 to working order:

  1. First of all, you need to install the latest patch from the developers. It is quite possible that the whole issue is a banal bug.
  2. Update drivers on your computer. First of all, the video card driver.
  3. Reinstall Fallout 4 or download another assembly (if a pirated version) or perform a “Cache Integrity Check” (if a Steam license).
  4. Check if there are any Russian letters on the path to the Fallout 4 directory (for example, D:\Games\Fallout 4). It shouldn't be like this, it might cause an error. Therefore, you will have to move it to an English-language folder (for example, D:\Games\Fallout 4).

Getting rid of crashes

You can try to fix the problem by lowering the settings. To do this, simply reduce all graphics settings to a minimum through the “Settings” item in the game launcher. Here's where you should try to let Fallout 4 start:

  • with lower resolution than now;
  • in windowed mode.

If it doesn't help, then you should disable it antivirus program and close all unnecessary running applications on the computer (including background ones). As a rule, after this the problems go away and the game stops crashing out of the blue. Provided that no files were damaged during the installation process.

Say goodbye to endless loading

In addition to the usual crashes, Fallout 4 can take forever to load on a black screen. You should try to solve this problem in one of the following ways:

  1. Set Windows compatibility mode
  2. Run as administrator.
  3. Run in windowed mode.
  4. Disable antivirus.
  5. Reinstall drivers.
  6. In Computer Properties, find Performance Options and select the Turn off DEP option in the Data Execution Prevention section.
  7. Reinstall the game.
  8. Change the build or buy a license (if the version is pirated).

One of these steps will definitely solve the problem of Fallout 4 not starting, but instead only seeing a black loading screen.

Running Fallout 4 in “full screen” mode

Unfortunately, in the event of such problems, it will not be possible to make the full mode run “in full screen”. Therefore, you will have to work around it. In appearance there will be no difference at all - it seems as if the game is actually running on Full Screen. And it’s also much more convenient to collapse it if you need a desktop. There are two ways to simulate full screen mode in Fallout 4.

The first is simpler, but you will have to change the settings of the computer itself - adjust the monitor resolution to the size of the window with the game, so that it runs on the “full screen”. How it's done:

  1. Launch launcher Fallou4Launcher.exe.
  2. Go to "Settings".
  3. Choose the most high resolution screen from those offered (but not exceeding the monitor resolution).
  4. Place a checkmark next to " Windowed mode without a frame."
  5. Save changes, but do not let it run.
  6. Go to the “Control Panel” on your computer and in the “Display” section, adjust the monitor resolution. You need to make it the same as the game resolution that was selected.
  7. Save changes and run!

But this method will change the resolution for all applications, so they will all launch this way. And this may not be a very convenient solution. Therefore there is a second option. It will have to change the system files of the game, but it will run in the resolution you need. Necessary.
