Chapter one, part two

Once in Nadoret, you have to complete more than one task. Many of them require specific characters. The warrior will be good, for example, for catching the Werewolf, which will be discussed later. Again, this doesn't mean you have to choose a specific class - just that some tasks will be easier to complete if you represent one or another available class. So, one of the first major tasks is to free the fairy from the island. In addition to numerous battles, you will have to solve one of the most difficult puzzles in the game - only to be completely disappointed because the reward for this will be meager. The second major task is freeing the magician, which also poses a challenge due to the fact that you will need to solve a not very pleasant puzzle. And the problem with it is not so much its complexity as the lack of any hints or clues. Once you understand what's what, you can solve it in less than a minute, but it may take you several tens of minutes to understand. Well, the last important task that is worth mentioning is the hunt for the Werewolf. This is a difficult quest, to complete which you will have to spend more than one healing potion. But the reward will be very impressive - you will receive a powerful sword, the strength of which is designated as 3w. Therefore, you need to deal with the pirates, but before that, try to complete all the side quests from them, as well as upgrade all the available skills from the local masters. After all, if you choose the most bloodthirsty method of dealing with pirates, that is, killing them, the elves will not want to help you train. However, there are other options: you can create sabotage so that the pirates start attacking each other, or you can communicate with their leaders and, using the gift of persuasion, persuade them to stop disturbing the elves. Having gotten rid of the pirates one way or another, return to the elves - they will take you to their queen, who will also be powerless. But she will give you hope - the fact is that she can try to heal Ardo if you find a special potion that is kept by a terrible demon in the depths of the cave, to which you will have access. Go there, but be prepared for a serious confrontation.

Chapter Three - The Demon's Cave

At the entrance to the cave you will be greeted by a magician who will ask you to find for him the magical seals that are contained in this cave. He himself does not want to go there, so he is ready to pay for each of the seals found. It’s worth saying right away - if you have enough gold, you don’t have to worry about this old man, he will pay no more than ten gold coins for each of the five seals, so the benefit will be small. With its help, you find yourself inside a cave, where a group of Amazons is already waiting for you, who were also hired by the magician to search for the seals. You don’t even have to try to convince them to join forces or just go different roads- They are determined to eliminate competitors. Therefore, deal with the Amazons and go in search of the five seals. When you find yourself in a room with a pentagram on the floor, check the character window. Make sure you have enough potions and other necessary items, after which you can use magic seals - they can be activated all together to get the maximum advantage, or you can select a couple of them. As mentioned earlier, the magician will not give much for these seals, so you can safely use them against the demon. After defeating him, you will receive a potion with which you need to return to the elf queen. Now she can heal Ardo, from whom you can learn that he is the keeper of the royal relics, and the crown was stolen by a villain who went to Hammerberg. Head there because that's where the fourth chapter of the game will be.

Chapter Four - Hammerberg

You will have to spend a lot of time in this city, as there is a large number of both plot and side quests, and many of them will be quite simple. But their number is simply off the charts, so you will have to be patient. Here you will find the sister of the elf queen, whose harp was stolen by the dragon. The quest is one of the most difficult in the game, but it is also a side quest, so you can easily refuse it. But still like this epic battle happens once in a lifetime, so if at some point you get tired of Hammerberg with monotonous tasks, you can test your strength. The selection of characters for this quest must be done especially carefully. The most important thing is that Forgram goes with you, and that you have a dragon hammer for him. This weapon deals maximum damage to the dragon, so it will be much easier to deal with the monster. As a result, after completing all the story quests, you should find yourself in the dungeon of the gnomes, where you will again have a hard time. But when you defeat all the opponents, and also meet with Mora, whom Ardo gave you a tip on, you will have access to the final location - the castle of the evil baron.

Final battle

Once in a location with a castle, you will need to get into it. To do this, you need to kill the port master and take the key to the secret dungeon from him. Through it you have to get to the castle, where a series of small quests await you. As a result, you will be able to get into the main hall of the castle, where all the important people of the kingdom are present. Approach the lady in red - this is the baron's wife, but the baron himself is not there. How to get to it? Ask his wife about all the guests, and then tell the guests what she said about them. The RPG genre is - how can I put it more precisely - very successful. Whatever the game is, it is at least a shameless project, worthy of familiarization. Take, for example, the year 2009, which has passed into the pages of history. Risen and Venetica - tried to keep up with "Gothic", it almost worked, and we were happy with what happened. Borderlands crossed hack"n"slash mechanics with shooting and turned into a shooter. Torchlight sparkled with arcade colors and light-heartedness. Even Beltion: Beyond Ritual, which did not receive the highest rating from our reviewer, was noted for its subtly recreated atmosphere of the original source. Well, maximum, standard, picture, handmade - Dragon Age: Origins. There was something to pass the evenings for those who liked to “swing” and act out roles, right?
The Year of the Tiger has already boasted two additions to role-playing redoubts. Ironically, they are continuations of the first-borns of the year before last. The Dark Eye was released almost a year and a half ago and was based on the desktop system of the same name (in its homeland - Das Schwarze Auge). On the monitor screen, this German miracle was most reminiscent of the old Dungeons & Dragons and its offspring - all sorts of KOTOR or Newerwinter Nights. The heroes reacted sluggishly to orders, the enemies greeted them with a combat pause, and they had to cross the boundless expanses of Aventuria only in the company of companions. The universe was sick of triviality: dragons, prophecies, evil gnomes, warlike Amazons - who can you surprise with cliches these days?
The RPG also didn’t exactly turn out to be an example to follow. There were a lot of things that were downright annoying. A role-playing system in which a good half of the skills can easily be thrown into the trash. Quite difficult fights and too strong opponents, from whom it was often much easier to make legs. Plus - too long trips around the world, delaying the passage for more than one hour.
Nevertheless, the brainchild of Radon Labs was fascinating. There were truly a lot of tasks, the world was huge, and the presence of a large number of classes and races was a good incentive to replay it. What new things will the sequel bring?

Twice in the same River of Time

We'll upset you right away: The River of Time is not a continuation at all. We are greeted by an interface that has not changed one iota, similar graphics, and what is there - similar classes and - oh, God - skills with spells. Imagine that you launch Diablo 3, open the character window, and there is a solid Lord of Destruction. Such a comparison, of course, is an exaggeration, but what kind of sediment remains in the soul is approximately understandable. The new Drakensang is a very large addon, with a new world, fresh locations, and bug fixes. But not the second part.
The plot generally precedes the original events by 23 years. The hero sails on a ship to the city of Nadoret in order to receive some kind of military education, in the company of a crew and random fellow travelers - among them, for example, the blacksmith Ardo, the one who started all the fuss in The Dark Eye. Suddenly the ship is attacked by pirates, and we come to our senses already in the city. No one here believes in pirates, and the protagonist decides to find out who actually attacked the group at night. And away we go:
Some old bugs in terms of gameplay have indeed been corrected, it’s worth giving credit where it’s due. To begin with, you are now allowed to return to already completed zones - in the original they were slammed shut along with many side missions, which caused a storm of anger. Considering that some side tasks are very interesting and it is not possible to complete them with the weak hero that we had at the time we were at one or another location for plot matters, this is a significant plus. A movement function has also appeared - you still need to stomp decently, but from now on you can at least somehow quickly teleport around the map, even if only from individual points.
What is truly new here, and not corrected/improved/well-forgotten old, are two fresh classes. Dwarf Druid - differs from his fellows in his ability to handle earth magic. He is able to stand up for himself in hand-to-hand combat, but he takes it not with attack, but rather with defense - plus the available spells will help with this quite well. The second debutant is a barbarian, a good warrior, boasting of combat spells like rage.
In principle, nothing new - standard heroes, not supernatural. If you've run through classic Drakensang with old characters up and down, give it a try. But when you sit down to play for the first time, or after a single passing The Dark Eye - it’s better to choose someone original, fortunately the range of heroes doesn’t complain about this. Take the same Amazon. Or a tramp. Or the good old gnome battering ram as a last resort.

That's all. There's nothing more surprising about Drakensang: The River of Time. After playing the original, in a couple of hours all the inherited vices will become obvious. In fact, they didn’t offer us anything and only modestly corrected the shortcomings (and not all) of the first part. Does it really affect the overall mechanics - no. It wasn’t the little things that needed to be changed, but something in the system as a whole. For example, remove half of the role-playing skills - why ask all this alchemy if we don’t use it at all? Or what is the use of social skills (seduction, charm, psychology) if they are needed once every five years? We don’t need the checkboxes, we’ve done them, so let them use them.
The partners are still modest and not charismatic. This is not for you Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, where you can devote a separate article to your comrades. They fight for themselves, grow in level, and react sluggishly to the events that occur in the plot. You don’t get used to them, they don’t catch you, you don’t want to return to their company after passing through. And it's sad. Plus, they are rather weak in battle. For example, a magician completely refuses to use spells. The archer does not shoot poisoned arrows. The doctor does not heal. You have to do everything manually, constantly switching from one hero to another. Hence the endless deaths and reboots. Although, perhaps try issuing decrees in pause mode - this will make the battles much easier.
They promised to make the “second part” more non-linear: the naive will think that it is, but the attentive ones, like us, will immediately spot the catch. Different starting mission in the city for different classes, plus a couple of other responses from NPCs to representatives of a different race. And you've had enough of nonlinearity.
Well, there are bugs - a whole hundred of them. Either the quest is not completed, or the companions fall asleep in eternal sleep, or the main character dies immediately after the cutscene. The scourge of many RPGs and simply large-scale projects has not escaped the new Drakensang. Therefore, it is better for pedants to wait for patches - you will save your nerves.

Ears, eyes, but not heart

The landscapes of Aventuria are beautiful, the feeling of the magic of the surrounding world does not leave for a second - for this Radon Labs should chip in to the artists for a bust. The music is beautiful as are the graphics. After all, Dynamedion got down to business again, writing excellent “classic” compositions. These are probably the main advantages for which, without exaggeration, you can sit down with Drakensang - they make a very strong impression, they keep you in the world for a little longer.
If you try to forget that a year and a half ago we already ate the same dish, and analyze what we have with a cool head, then Drakensang: The River of Time is thirty hours of good role-playing action. The dialogues are cute, but nothing more, the quests are sometimes funny, but copied from other people's works, the characters lack character, and in general the whole game as a whole lacks some kind of internal idea, original or something. But you fall in love with the world of Aventuria, despite the stereotypes.
But, damn it, there’s no point in serving us the same soup twice, no matter how delicious it is. We want the sequels to be continuations, and not "the same cabbage soup...". Not changing the interface, leaving the same role-playing system and even the spells of the heroes is rudeness and arrogance, what people usually call “cheating.” It’s good that they didn’t put a two in the title, otherwise they would have received another point less. And of course there is no doubt that these games deserve awards, but behind all this heap of advertising and other PR, many players overlook extremely interesting, but at the same time limited in budget, and, accordingly, in promotion, products. And the German series of role-playing games DrakenSang is a prime example of this. Having collected all possible awards in its native Germany, the series was never able to enter the world stage and sank into oblivion, leaving players with the opportunity to go on only two magical adventures, called The Dark Eye and The river of time.

The series was first released in 2009, thanks to the development team from Radon Labs. The first game, Drakensang: The Dark Eye, was based on, popular in Germany, role system Das Schwarze Auge (analogous to the American Dungeon & Dragons). In principle, it is very similar to D&D, your heroes also have parameters, such as strength, dexterity and courage. All your manipulations over your protégé are accompanied by the throwing of game, polyhedral dice (six-sided - mostly, less often twenty-sided). That is, if you attack an enemy, the system automatically rolls such a die, adds your strength and attack modifier to the rolled result, and if the resulting number exceeds the enemy’s armor and agility, then you will inflict damage on him - if it does not exceed, then there will be a miss. The same system works in dialogues and magical duels, but the parameters there are different (charm and intelligence). Of course, you don’t have to delve into this system thoroughly; all these calculations are made in

, which you can simply hide so as not to burden yourself with calculations. However, when creating a character, it is better to carefully read the description of each parameter, so as not to end up with a magician who not only does not know spells, but cannot put two words together, or a valiant knight who trembles with fear when the first goblin appears.

However, in all other respects, DrakenSang is a typical RPG in which you will certainly have to click a lot with the mouse, fight enemies with the help of skills and spells, and also deal with the distribution of experience points and various clothes.
From the point of view of technical and social progress, this world is at the level of our Middle Ages: knights, castles, chain mail and swords with crossbows. And although the hypothesis about the spherical shape of the planet has not yet been fully accepted, the local population more than compensates for the lack of science with an excess of magic and witchcraft.
The intelligent population of the planet is represented by three races:
People: a whole group of nationalities - the Middle Earthers (essentially Europeans), the Tulamids (people of the east), and the Torvalians (a daring northern tribe)
Elves: meadow and forest (there are still higher ones, but there is almost nothing left of them) - proud and secluded tribes that live in isolated communities.
Gnomes: united clans of gnomes have chosen the foothills of mountains and gorges, and they are usually engaged in mining, although among them there are rich merchants and renegade pilgrims.
When creating a character, you will choose one of the presented races and nationalities, and depending on your choice, you will be offered available game classes. Remember - among the Torvalians and gnomes there are no magicians, but they are excellent warriors, and the Tulamids and elves are known for their inclinations with witchcraft powers and the secret arts of handling a bow and dagger.

WE'RE ASSEMBLYING A TEAM
After choosing your character's race, you will be faced with the question of choosing a game class. And although the game presents a fairly large list of prepared game archetypes, I highly recommend taking on the task of modeling your future protégé yourself. Because if you plan to play as a warrior, you have no need for bow and dagger skills, which developers often slip into the blank, and for a magician, wielding a sword is of no use. Therefore, it is better to distribute all available points yourself in order to achieve greater efficiency from your hero.
In the future, the development of your character will depend on the points gained by completing tasks or killing monsters, experience. Moreover, its distribution is not tied to the transition to new level
Based on my impressions of the game, I would recommend taking the military specialty, since magic is not very impressive. There are enough spells in the game, but there are no lethal fireballs, as well as other massive spells, although the healing of healers is an indispensable thing. It’s easier for a warrior in this matter, because there are powerful techniques, and a much more extensive wardrobe, starting from a worn leather jacket and ending with enchanted plate armor, which, complete with a rich assortment of weapons, allows you to shred enemies better than any sorcerer.
But your character is not everything, because he will not travel the world of Aventuria alone. Drakensang is a team game, and you will always share adventures with one to three companions. Therefore, you need to adapt the character not only to yourself, but also to them. Why do you need four warriors on one team? And will they be able to cope with all opponents?

Ardo is a charismatic warrior with unwavering principles of morality and honor. Despite the fact that he masterfully wields his long sword, if necessary, he easily solves problems diplomatically. It is he who will give the hero the most valuable advice.

Forgrimm is a dwarf, and that says it all. He always gets into trouble, and proves the strength of his claims with a precise blow of an ax. So if you plan to sneak up on your enemies unnoticed, then it is better to leave him in the nearest tavern, because he will never agree to lead foul play, but he won’t refuse a mug of light Ferdoksky

Kyano is a priest of Fex, the god of deceit and theft. A real Casanova and a flatterer. The king of castles, traps and secret ambushes. In open battle, of course, he does not shine with heroic strength, but he hits in the back just as it should.
It’s a pleasure to watch Chiano and Forgnimma swear; these guys quarrel over every little thing, like old spouses. If it were not for the constant intervention of the judicious Ardo, they would have been at each other's throats long ago.

Yakon and Faris - she is a healer ranger, he is a gray mage. According to the plot, you will choose which of them will die a heroic death, and which will travel with you. In principle, if you are not a healer, then Feyris’s abilities are simply irreplaceable. And if you consider that she is the only companion of the fairer sex, then the choice is obvious. A pleasant feminine face and rounded shapes, in my opinion, are preferable... :)

The River of Time is a prequel to the first part of the series - The Dark Eye, where we once again, in the company of four faithful friends, saved the world from another collapse. Now we learn the story of how this heroic quartet met. And we must give credit to the developer, this time they hit the nail on the head with the plot, and instead of another epic adventure in the company of brave paladins, we simply find ourselves in an exciting detective story that Forgrimm tells to his young, adopted daughter.
Our still young and inexperienced hero goes to the rich city of Nadoret to complete the training he has begun (it all depends on your class, if you are a warrior, you will study in the city guard, if you are a magician, then in the guild of magicians, etc. .d.) And by chance, a mysterious trio of strangers boarded exactly the ship that he chose for his journey, and immediately after the arrival of new passengers, at the first night stop, the entire crew was attacked by pirates. And in a glorious battle with an outnumbered enemy, we get hit hard on the head with a baton...


With these nice people, you have to go through fire and water.

And we will wake up in Nadoret, thanks to those same strangers - now the time has come to get to know each other better! Greetings! Ardo, Kyano and Forgrimm. Although only the first one will greet you, the other two will be busy with another squabble, and such a squabble that the gnome will interrupt all other words. These guys are just dealing with the problem of piracy, which is Lately became very relevant, since the robbers crossed all reasonable boundaries. Actually, this is what you will have to do after you complete your studies. And ahead of you await corrupt officials, fights with merciless gentlemen of fortune, and detective investigations. However, this does not mean that you will have to pore over customs statements and constantly board ships with the Jolly Roger. There will be werewolves (and those in uniform too), and elven caves with the undead, and monstrous octopuses - everything is as it should be.
In addition to the main task, traveling across the map of Aventuria, on a beautiful ship, along the waves of the Great River, you will encounter many additional missions, some of which will be no less interesting than the main task. Moreover, having completed all the tasks in one city, do not be lazy to look into it again, a little later - and you will have the opportunity to complete more complex quests.
However, with all the advantages of an exquisite company, I want to say right away that the battles in the game are not for those who like to chop everyone into pieces in a second. Each battle is a test of strength, both for your character and for your skills as a player. The battles are very measured, all opponents attack in order, and frankly speaking, most of the enemies are very tough nuts to crack. Even at the minimum difficulty level, you won’t be able to let everything take its course; you’ll have to plan your every move.
And battles with game bosses are quite a puzzle. Sometimes it takes more than one hour to destroy the villains. However, it happens that the whole team is killed by a pack of wolves, so Drakensang is not a game for the faint of heart.


ATTENTION TO DETAIL
The game amazes with its amazing elaboration of the game world - however, this is typical of the German role-playing school. The city looks like a city: many citizens on the street, rigging in the port, drunken revelers near the tavern and loud cries of merchants in the market square. Every now and then you come across walking cats on the streets! Where else have you seen this? In the barracks you can curiously watch the training battles of the guards, and while walking past the river, you will certainly notice boats with fishermen floating nearby.
And in general, game world, although it is not very large, but it has a sense of homeliness and warmth. Designers and artists approached their work properly. And special thanks to the developers for the magnificent body models and beautiful faces (especially for female characters), you just can’t take your eyes off them!

FLY IN A BARREL OF ALE

Of course, Drakensang has a number of flaws, like all other games. The lack of task lines for the player’s companions and relationships within the team is very disappointing. In Nevervinter Nights and Dragon Age, a paladin taken into a team of thieves and assassins would very quickly feel out of place, but in the River of Time, such relationships are absent.
However, there is very little that is bad or unfinished in the game. Yes, Drakensang will not spin up your video card cooler to the maximum, as Dragon Age will, and your processor will not boil from scales similar to Skyrim. No, this is not what makes this game captivating. It gives you the opportunity to go in search of adventure, in the company of true friends, in the best traditions of role-playing games.
